Corwin Amendment
Mar. 2nd, 2021 02:16 amHow We Know the “Civil War” Was Not About Slavery?
“Shortly after the South seceded the Republican controlled Congress submitted, and Lincoln supported, a Thirteenth Amendment that would guarantee the security of slavery if the South would rejoin the Union. It was called the Corwin Amendment and several Union states ratified it but it soon became apparent that the South wanted independence and the amendment died.. Had it passed slavery in the United States would have continued under Lincoln’s administration and Republican Party rule. The North’s motive for invading a sovereign nation, the Confederate States of America, was not to free their oppressed black brothers and sisters. Lincoln’s and the Republican Party’s primary aim was to secure the continuing flow of Southern wealth extracted via protective tariffs."
"Lincoln and the U.S. Congress publicly declared that their invasion of the southern states was not about slavery but “saving the union.” The Northern-controlled House and Senate had also passed a proposed constitutional amendment (the Corwin Amendment) in March of 1861 that would have prohibited the federal government from ever interfering with slavery. Lincoln endorsed this amendment in his first inaugural address, saying that he had no opposition to making the protection of slavery “express and irrevocable” (his exact words) in the text of the Constitution."
